Yes, the mind-meld, the Vulcan mind-fusion... some of the most intriguing, compelling, even fascinating, moments of Star Trek. Our favourite Vulcan is not too picky, either: aliens, machines, rock-melting Hortas... It's a wonder he stayed sane!

The guard behind the door won't let them get out! |
On the other side, Spock has proposed to try a meld... |
...through the door and wall themselves! |
He touches the door with his fingertips... |
...and the wall behind the guard. |
Spock again! |
Kirk and Spock need to communicate with the Horta. |
Spock tries telepathy... |
'Paiiiiiiin!' He channels the hurt Horta! |
Poor Spock slumps back into his Captain's arms... |
...who comforts him and holds him in his arms... |
...for quite some time! They even hold hands! |
They've got to try again, but Spock must touch the Horta... |
...a creature secreting a rock-melting acid! |
Will he suffer the same pain as the Horta? |
Well... yes. And the Horta is in a lot of pain! |
Bones arrives to heal the Horta and is quite surprised by the scene. |
For long minutes, Spock shares the Horta's mind. |
Spock weeps. |
It takes Kirk several tries to snap Spock out of it! |
A third meld to make a deal between Horta and miners. |
Spock comes to T'Pau, |
respectfully kneels at her feet, |
and she melds with him. |
The Captain asks Spock to meld with Nomad, |
Spock prepares himself, |
and it begins. |
He repeats what he perceives of Nomad's thoughts: |
a mission to seek its creator, |
and a mission to eradicate imperfect things. |
He cites another name alongside with Nomad's... |
...the probe had combined with an alien one. |
But then something strange happens... |
Spock starts repeating in a strange voice: 'sterilize!' |
Kirk is getting worried: the meld is going on but Spock is not touching Nomad anymore! |
Kirk shouts at Nomad to release the 'unit Spock' |
Spock's mind is freed... |
...and he slumps into Kirk's arms. |
Kirk takes him away from Nomad, |
and props Spock against a wall... |
...but the Vulcan is still weak. |
Spock starts explaining what he learned. |
he is better, but Kirk won't let him go! |
He's still so worried... |
...even when he finally does let go! |
Spock raises from the biobed... |
...and grabs McCoy's wrists. |
Mirror Spock wants answers! |
He advances on our helpless Bones... |
...and backs him to the wall. |
The Meld! |
Spock approaches the drugged John Gill... |
...and melds with him at Kirk's demand. |
Gill can now answer Kirk's questions! |
The ominous meld music is on! |
Spock touches the rock... |
...to influence their jailer outside. |
Spock is suddenly thrown away! |
It's not as smooth as on Eminiar VII... |
Bones and a (doomed, of course) redshirt run to him. |
Awww, Spock & Bones do like each other! |
Ain't they cute? |
But Jim is so worried again! |
While on the bridge, Spock suddenly slumps and holds his head! |
Kirk (in the wrap around shirt) and Bones are instantly worried. |
Spock has just felt the death of the Vulcan crew of the Intrepid! 400 people... |
Time is short... |
...and Spock's & Kirk's minds meld. |
They start stating their identities repeatedly. |
Kirok does not want to let Kirk be! |
He grows seriously agitated and invades Spock's mind! |
Spock fights back! |
(Btw, this ep is rich with Shatner (tm) moments!) |
Spock grits his teeth... Will it work? |
'His mind... he's an extremely dynamic individual.' Hah. |
He begins with Scotty... |
...who's apparently not very happy with it. |
Ominous lightning! |
Then it's Bones' turn, and he looks like he's remembering what happened to him with Mirror Spock! |
But this is nice, unbearded Spock. Bones is still not cool with it. |
Spock keeps his Captain for dessert! |
He gives him loving, thoughtful looks... |
...even his pointy ears curl slightly towards Kirk! |
The famed hazel eyes of fanfiction! |
Spock melds with Kollos on the bridge. |
Spock-Kollos greets everyone on the bridge. |
The new entity is much more smiling than Spock. |
Thanks to Kollos, the Enterprise is back on course! |
Kollos waxes lyrical on the joys of being corporeal... |
...and then realizes the anguish and loneliness of it! |
Kirk orders him to leave Spock, and Kollos does so, though not happily. |

OMG Spock has forgotten his visor! He'll go mad! |
Kirk is über-worried and yells at Spock to cover his eyes... |
...too late! Spock is all rigid... |
...anguish is painted on his face! |
He can't speak, but he's clearly upset... |
...which is understandable given what he sees! |
He starts fighting... |
...until Kirk stuns him! Will he go mad for having glimpsed Kollos? |
He is lost in his mind, and his life-signs are ebbing. |
Kirk is not sure the blind, telepathic Miranda will do her best to help... |
...so he goes and confronts her! |
She joins with him... |
...Spock writhes and has weird visions again! |
He melds back with her. |
Here he comes! He's shaky, but sane! |
Kirk and Bones rush to help him! |
