Yes, let's talk about fashion. Extra-super-micro skirts, pajama-like uniforms in the series which are even acknowledged as such by Kirk in Tomorrow is Yesterday ('just something I slept in', or something like that), and of course the strange hairdos of the ladies.

Were No Man Has Gone Before
Well... The colours are wrong, the eyebrows are wrong, the shirts are wrong, the braids are wrong, the earpiece is wrong, the Doctor is wrong, and for once we see a woman, Dr Elizabeth Dehner, in trousers. Even Spock acts strange and shouts stuff. At least Gary Mitchell's good-looking, in spite of the weird eyes which almost blinded the actor so that he looked down on everything and everyone (which actually ties in with what happens to his character).

How No One Will Dress, After


Sulu in blue, Scotty in yellow, a woman in trousers. Yep. And the older guy is the Doc: no Bones yet.
Mr Spock has strange eyebrows, a yellow shirt and acts more emotional than usual. And the fringe is all wrong!

Red for technicians (and so why not Uhura's? besides, her uniform IS red...) (A Piece of the Action)

In the Mirror Universe, we see all three colours for Jumpsuits: here, a Vulcan in blue

The Mirror Universe
Star Trek has its own, in-built Alternate Universe which we enter in a couple of episodes throughout the various series. It made fanfic canon, then, since the episode Mirror, Mirror implied several parallel universes may exist in other dimensions - and what is fanfic if not more or less alternate universes? Watch out for Sulu's scar, Uhura's knife, Spock's beard, aaaaand... the Gold Bolero! and the gold sashes, too. Shiny! And, of course, there's some torture...

Lieutenant Palamas has a reasonable hairdo at the beginning, given what her colleagues pile up on their heads
But Apollo changes her clothes and piles up her hair in something which would make Janice Rand herself green with envy and impotent rage!

In Journey to Babel, we meet Spock's parents (see also Spock's Family). Amanda, a Human who has adopted a Vulcan lifestyle, wears strange things on her head and Sarek looks quite martial, for all his 'we Vulcans believe in peace' attitude towards Starfleet.


Kirk can't help sniggering: he knows where Spock's habit of steepling his fingers comes from...

Really, really bizarre uniforms with ugly, unpractical boxes on the front to register your medical data. And the frighteningly orange spacesuits. But we get to see Spock in black Vulcan clothes. And there's the Sickbay scene.
